This Kpelie tribal mask embodies the rich symbolism of Senufo mythology and culture, representing an idealized form of beauty. Key features celebrated by the Senufo include a prominent forehead, deep-arching brows, a narrow straight nose, and an open mouth that reveals the teeth. The arm-like forms and geometric shapes along the sides of the face symbolize the intricate hairstyles worn by Senufo women. Atop the mask sits a bird representing the hornbill, a powerful symbol of fertility and supernatural female strength. Traditionally, Kpelie masks are used in dances during funerals for elder women and men, honoring the newly departed who have joined their ancestors.
